Billie Eilish has earned the top honors at the first-ever Apple Music Awards.
The pop star will celebrate her award — as “global artist of the year” — with a performance on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park in Cupertino.
Attendees had to enter to win tickets for the free concert. Those who missed out can still watch a live stream of the performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. Details about the live stream will be added here once they are made available.
These awards are “a celebration of the best and boldest musicians of 2019 and the enormous impact they have had on global culture this year,” according to a news release.
“The Apple Music Awards are designed to recognize the passion, energy and creativity of the world’s favorite artists,” said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music and International Content. “The musically diverse group of inaugural winners have sparked deep social conversation, influenced culture and inspired our customers around the world. We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate them.”
The recipients of these inaugural awards were announced on Monday (Dec. 2).
Three of the five awards went to Eilish. Besides winning global superstar of the year, the pop star also won album of the year for “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” — which was the most streamed music of 2019, with over a billion on Apple Music alone. She’ll also share the honors for songwriter of the year with her brother Finneas.
In the remaining two categories, Lizzo won for breakthrough artist of the year and — no surprise — Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” won for song of the year.
“The winners for global artist of the year, songwriter of the year and breakthrough artist of the year were hand-selected by Apple Music’s global editorial team of experts and tastemakers and given to artists who have true passion for their craft, who boldly defy conventions in the category and who embody a sense of humanity, where listeners are drawn as much to who they are as to their music,” according to a news release. “The awards for album of the year and song of the year are based on streaming data and reflective of what Apple Music customers have been listening to this year.”
